Museum of Technology

TekGuide is the mobile guide to the Museum of Technology, introducing to you the development of Finnish industry, stories of innovations and those of contemporaries. The guide will tell you how iron making was taught in the 18th century, how fat cells can today be used to grow jawbone in the patient's abdomen, and more.

The guide will take you through four exhibitions on the first floor of the round building in the Museum of Technology: Our Life is Chemistry, From Ore to Metal, From Metal to Products and All Things of Wood. In each exhibition you will explore four objects from four different periods in Finnish history.

  • Before 1860s: Pre-industrial period
  • Turn of the 19th and 20th centuries: Beginning of the industrialisation
  • 1950s and 1970s: Era of reconstruction and birth of consumerism
  • 2000s: Time of new innovations

Take the time journey in the Museum of Technology – on your own or in pairs. Borrow a guide phone from the museum ticket sales.

  • Duration ca. one hour.

Take a plunge into the stories of industrialisation!

Our Life is Chemistry
Our Life is Chemistry

Do you know what Finland's first pharmaceutical factory manufactured? Or what got children interested in paper recycling when your grandparents were toddlers? Our Life is Chemistry is an exhibition that brings molecules to everyday life. The label on a tin of paint, push of an inhalator or an old oil pump reveal what everyday things need chemistry to work and what are the stories or people behind chemical formulae.

From Ore to Metal
From Ore to Metal

Metal is a necessary raw material in the modern day: every day you use transport, cutlery, electronics and scores of other products manufactured with metals. Where does all that metal come from and where does it end up? From Ore to Metal is an exhibition where ore rises up to the ground, is transformed into commonly used metal, ends into a car scrap yard at the end of its lifecycle and again back to use through separation and recycling.

From Metal to Products
From Metal to Products

Cruise ships, paper machinery, Abloy locks, Rapala fish baits... The history of Finnish metal industry goes back a long way. In the olden times, blacksmiths made metal products from axe blades to sickles in their forges: contemporary products of the Finnish metal industry are renowned as world-class expertise products that satisfy even the most demanding customers. From Metal to Products is an exhibition that opens up the industrial history of metal: an old Valmet tractor encapsulates the core of the modern innovation thinking.

All Things of Wood
All Things of Wood

From early on, there has been global demand for Finnish fur, tar and wood. And we even discovered how to produce paper from wood. All Things of Wood tells the story of wood and the forest – Finnish natural resources and their impact on the Finnish mentality. The exhibition brings to the fore memories of a traditional nook in a log house, Tampella factory's impressive paper-making machinery, or the frame saw that played a significant role in the development of the saw industry.
